The story behind the contest is very captivating. The tale has it that Lohri is celebrated to the heroism of Dulla Bhatti. Dulla Bhatti was a very kind and generous man, who worked for the well-being of the society and people of the tribe. He used to rob the rich and help the poor.
Amongst all his heroic deeds, he saved the life of two girls Sunder and Mundriye which is celebrated as Lohri every year. It is said that he once rescued two girls from the kidnappers, who threatened to marry them forcefully. To secure their future, he adopted the two girls. This heroism is remembered every year on this festival and celebrated with great zeal and enthusiasm. On this occasion children go from door to door and sing the following song:
Sunder Munderiye ho!
Tera kaun vichara ho!
Dulla Bhatti ho!
Dulle ne dhi viyahi ho!
Ser shaker pai ho!
(Dulla gave his daughter a kilo of sugar as a marriage gift).
